A Week Makes a Year

FASHION: Although Fashion Week may seem insignificant to the average person, it actually has a great impact on society.

Across the world, high-end designers frantically check up on their picturesque models and awe-worthy clothing. Yes, Fashion Week has arrived.

Many scroll past any sort of headline mentioning this event, which might seem sensible, but there is much more to Fashion Week than one may think.

Fashion Week is a month-long event hosted by the four main fashion capitols of the world: New York, London, Milan and Paris (occurring in that order). Like a large designer show-and-tell, all the runways get pulled out as the world’s fashion industry waits to see what next line brands such as Chanel, Valentino and Marc Jacobs have come out with.

The effort put in by these designers does not go unnoticed by clothing companies who market to teens. In fact, if this isn’t surprising enough, most of what is in your closet mirrors what was shown on the runway before. Does this mean that stores like Forever 21, Pac Sun and Brandy Melville are all trying to imitate high-end clothing? Actually, yes!

For example, just a year ago, models of various brands showcased similar fashion at Spring Fashion Week 2014. Crop tops seemed to be a recurring style on the runways with brands like Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton and Lacoste. Soon enough, teenage girls across the world were showing their midriffs for the sake of this trend. Christian Dior and Monique Lhullier influenced many girls’ closets with their creation of wide-legged harem pants. Of course, everyone wants to stay with current trends.

Whether it’s lilac or fringe, they’ve all originated on the runway and possibly ended up in your closet. You might want to think twice about not keeping up with Fashion Week. Who knows, you might buy an item similar to one you’ve seen on the runway and be the first to set the trend among your friends.
