TREND: Tattoo artists test their limits by exploring new styles of body modification.

By Ruthie Farrell, Staff Writer

Over the past few years, tattoos have taken long strides of progress in our society. What used to be considered taboo or alternative is now a common form of self-expression. As more people are deciding to modify their bodies, it is increasingly challenging to stand out from the crowd. Normal tattoos no longer take the cake in terms of uniqueness or extremity. Now the people who really wish to turn heads are forced to take their creativity to the next level. Fortunately for these radicals, there are a few options available.

Traditional tattoos may be visually stimulating, but the majority of them take on a two-dimensional look that causes the tattoo to be less distinguishable. Recently, a good number of individuals have been trying “3D ink.” There is nothing special about the ink itself; tattoo artists just manipulate it in a way that makes the finished result appear to pop beyond the tattoo-holder’s body. This woman takes advantage of this effect with a tattoo of a gory eye. At first glance, one might think that her skin actually forms a pattern that rises from a pit of darkness in her leg. Of course this is not true, but the three dimensional effect on this tattoo forces people to look twice.

Another way tattoos are able to “stick out” is by forming raised bumps on the skin. This can be accomplished by using scarification. Scarification is a method in which tattoo artists either brand the skin or cut into the skin using a scalpel to form a design. It may seem gruesome, but the desired effect it produces is not bloody or unsightly. It appears as a smooth, slightly raised pattern like the Saints’ sign depicted on this individual’s arm. The cuts take a couple of months to heal, and since they are essentially open wounds, there is the risk of infection.

Black light ink tattoos offer another way of grabbing the spotlight, but only under certain settings. These tattoos appear to be a mere outline of an image in normal lighting, but when seen under a black light they glow like this man’s tattoo. This allows a person to maintain a certain level professionalism while suppressing his or her inner party-animal until the appropriate occasion.
