SOCCER: Poly’s varsity girls’ soccer prepares for a successful season this year, despite a loss of seniors.

This season, Poly’s varsity girls’ soccer hopes to bring home a league and CIF title. “I believe that this year’s team has a chance of winning CIF if we work hard every game and leave our hearts out on the field,” stated Varsity Captain Taylor Russell (12).

Despite the loss of three strong seniors last year, the team intends to bounce back with the addition of a talented group of freshmen and sophomores. “They are excellent players who give new assets to our team,” Russell stated. The girls stepped up during preseason, working hard every practice and have proven to the coaches that they will make positive contributions to this year’s team. With experienced seniors and a strong group of underclassmen, the girls plan on winning a league and CIF title.

Although the team gained freshmen and sophomores, changes still need to be made in order for the team to regain last year’s strength. Last year, the Bear’s defensive line and mid-field were extremely strong, so this year’s preseason focused on working up to that level.

Although some improvements are needed, Jonnae Joseph (12) commented, “I do not doubt that we will get to that point by the time season is here.”

At the end of the day, the season’s success depends on team chemistry. “I think we can have a very strong season as long as we, as a whole, put in the effort and time that’s needed to develop as a team and not individually,” Joseph said.
