to get driver’s licenses. California will join the nine other states that have already passed this type of law. The licenses only allow illegal immigrants to drive and cannot be used for anything else. According to the Public Policy Institute of California, L.A. County alone contains an estimated 900,000 undocumented immigrants, and California as a whole contains an estimated 2.6 million –23 percent of the country’s illegal immigrant population. “This bill will enable millions of people to get to work safely and legally,” Governor Jerry Brown stated. Even though their ways to work are legal, their jobs are still not.

Getting people to work is a wonderful thing, but the problem remains that the illegal immigrants are still undocumented. Illegal immigrants should not be given any extra resources because they should not be here in the first place. According to the White House website, “America’s immigration system is broken. Too many employers game the system by hiring undocumented workers and there are 11 million people living in the shadows. Neither is good for the economy or the country.” Giving this large amount of people who do not contribute to the economy through taxes more opportunities to continue working will not help California. California needs hard-working people (and a good amount of illegal immigrants are), but the state needs them to be legal so that they pay taxes and support the government that supports them.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement website reveals that 55 percent of illegal immigrants removed in 2012 were convicted criminals. This leads to another point: a good portion of illegal immigrants commit crimes after they illegally come to the United States. Providing illegal aliens with licenses will not only encourage more people to immigrate illegally, but will additionally cause more future criminals to come into the United States.

The White House website also says we need to ensure that “everyone plays by the same rules.” The United States is not against immigrants becoming U.S. citizens; it is just interested in them living in the U.S. legally. Illegal immigrants would not need this type of license if they followed the laws and became legal immigrants. This bill encourages the increase of illegal immigration, which increases the financial burden on the state. Illegal immigrants cost California $21,755,953,468 in 2009, according to the Federation for American Immigration Reform. Those crossing the border now know that even though they are illegally entering the U.S., if they go to California they can obtain a license.
