NHL: Teams make blockbuster trades in their final preparations for the playoffs.

By Jared Kanouse, Staff Writer

The NHL has officially reached the stretch run. With the trade deadline just past, a few blockbuster trades shook the NHL and how teams will prepare for what they hope to be a deep playoff run. This year’s big winners came from both Conferences, as the New York Rangers, Montreal Canadians, St Louis Blues and Los Angeles Kings made the substantial moves that brought new talent to their rosters and that now will give them a better chance of making and succeeding in the playoffs.

The New York Rangers made one of the biggest moves in recent history, shipping away their captain Ryan Callahan to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for the Lightning’s captain, Martin St Louis. The Lightning will also receive a first-round pick from the Rangers in 2015 and a conditional second-round pick in this year’s draft, which returns to the Rangers in the case that Callahan re-signs with the Lightning, as he is in the final year of his contract. This swapping of captains is relatively unheard of, and it is yet to be seen whether or not it will be worth it. While St Louis has consistently put up points over his career, there is no telling how he will fit into the Rangers’ system. Also, St Louis is 10 years Callahan’s senior, making him close to the end of his career. No matter what happens with this trade, it is sure to change the scope of the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Also in the Eastern Conference, the Montreal Canadians made a few deals in order to bolster an already talented lineup. In support positions, the Habs added defenseman Mike Weaver from the Florida Panthers and Devan Dubnyk from the Nashville Predators. While these moves aren’t designed to sell tickets, they could help produce wins. With a roster not seen as a major playoff contender due to a lack of depth, the Canadians made a brave move. Also, with goalie Carey Price currently injured, the Canadians were left with the aging Peter Budaj. Overall these were some of the smarter moves made at the deadline as they also made a profound statement about the management’s expectations for the team.

Moving on to the Western Conference, the St. Louis Blues made without a doubt the best trade of the season. With the highest goal differential in the league and a team of young standouts, there was one thing this team really needed: a star power-goaltender who can step up in big games and take over a series in the playoffs. They got that in Ryan Miller. Since the beginning of his career, Miller has been consistently one of the best in the game and almost single-handedly kept the Buffalo Sabres from becoming the laughingstock of the NHL. Now he comes to a loaded Blues team with the highest of aspirations.

Finally, the Los Angeles Kings made a move in acquiring star forward Marian Gaborik from the Columbus Blue Jackets. While it is unclear how they will fit him into the lineup, they obtained a consistent scorer with great hands for the relatively low price of Matt Frattin. The Kings are also one of the top tier teams in the NHL, and with the acquisition of a scorer like Gaborik, they

The trade deadline saw some contenders decide to continue with what they had on their rosters and others make huge moves. Watch out for the Blues down the stretch as they entered the Olympic Break on fire and picked up where they left off right after.
