LEADERSHIP: ASB President Mae Johnson makes a positive impact on Poly High School.

For decades the Associated Student Body (ASB) has provided a great way for students to practice a tradition near and dear to the heart of America: democracy. Every April, Poly students are given the opportunity to participate in elections. In comfortable classroom settings surrounded by friends and without the “seriousness” of the adult world, the student body elects an individual whom they hope will represent and voice their opinions to the administration. Last April, Poly students selected Mae Johnson (12) as their new ASB president. With summer gone and a new school year well underway, Johnson and ASB hope to host innovative and fun events throughout the school year in order to stimulate students’ pride across campus.

So far in the 2014-2015 school year, ASB hosted the Back To School Dance and P.R.I.D.E. Carnival in what Johnson explained to be “an attempt to get people pumped up.” ASB’s efforts have not gone unnoticed as students across campus are feeling a revival of school spirit. “I notice a lot more student interaction and overall school spirit,” Poly student Samantha Brien (12) said.

Johnson fully understands the impact her work has on Poly students and intends to listen to what the students would find enjoyable. “As much as I would like to force my crazy ideas on the students of Poly, I’d rather work together with the student body to make this year a success for everyone,” she expressed.

Her biggest goal going into office was “to make this year a great last year for the seniors and to ensure the underclassmen feel the same way when they graduate.” Johnson has had an exceptional start to the school year and has no intentions of slowing down.

As the school year continues to zoom past and with homecoming rapidly approaching, students can only wonder what surprises Johnson and ASB have in store. For now, she leaves friendly hints, stating, “You’re just gonna have to wait and see, ladies and gents.”
