ENTERTAINMENT: This December is home to many amazing films.

Winter break for Poly High School students starts on December 23rd and ends on January 7th. This is the ideal time to go see some of the best movies of the year. Here are the top movies you should consider watching on this Christmas break:

If you want to go see a science fiction blockbuster, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is highly recommended. The film was directed by Rian Johnson and stars Daisy Ridley as Rey, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, and the great Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa. The film follows Rey as she gets training from Luke Skywalker while an unforgettable battle between the Resistance and First Order ensues. The film was a hit because Star Wars is a loved franchise that seems to keep getting better with each new film. Star Wars: The Last Jedi opened on December 15th. 

A highly recommended funny movie to see is Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. The comedy directed by Jake Kasdan stars Kevin Hart as Moose Finbar, Dwayne Johnson as Dr. Smolder Bravestone, Karen Gillan as Ruby Roundhouse, and Jack Black as Professor Shelly Oberon. The plot centers around a group of high school kids as they are sucked into an old video game called Jumanji. Inside the game, the kids become the avatars they have chosen and must survive Jumanji in order to return home. The movie is a sequel to the classic Robin Williams film Jumanji. It will be an enjoyable movie experience because of all the talented actors involved in the production of the movie. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle opened on December 20th.

A unique movie to see this December is called Downsizing. The film is directed by Alexander Payne and stars Matt Damon as Paul Safranek and Kristen Wiig as Audrey Safranek. The movie takes place in a world where scientists discover how to shrink humans in order to solve overpopulation. With this new discovery, Paul and Audrey make the decision to leave their busy lives and “downsize” to live in a shrunken community. However, “downsizing” comes with many consequences. This film stands as the most unique film this December based on its unprecedented plot. Downsizing opens on December 22nd.

If you want to see a musical this holiday season, The Greatest Showman is highly recommended. The musical was directed by Michael Gracey and stars Hugh Jackman as P.T Barnum, Zac Efron as Phillip Carlyle, and Zendaya as Anne Wheeler. It’s follows a man named P.T Barnum, who gave birth to show business by creating worldwide phenomenon. This original musical is a rare treasure that film audiences will love. The Greatest Showman opened on December 20th.

If you like movies based on true stories, The Post is highly recommended. The film was directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Meryl Streep as Kay Graham, and Tom Hanks as Ben Bradlee. The story takes place in the early 1970s when a government cover up that has lasted four U.S presidential terms inspires the country’s first female newspaper publisher and a hard-driving editor of The Washington Post to join the battle between journalists and the government. This film will become a new classic that audiences will watch for years. This is due to the amazing film legends that contributed to this film such as Steven Spielberg, the most talented director of our time. The movie features some of the greatest actors in film history. The Post opens on December 22nd.
