Vanessa Douty is the new ASB director at Poly High School.

ASB: Poly has recently suffered the loss of its beloved ASB director Michael Breyer, but students have reacted well to his replacement, Vanessa Douty.

Michael Breyer recently left Poly High after several years of teaching, and his positon has been filled by Vanessa Douty. Douty does not want to tear down Breyer’s work and start again, but said she wants to continue “building on the traditions of Poly High School.” The success of Poly’s Homecoming assembly demonstrates the vitality that Douty is bringing to Poly. Douty says that her goal as ASB director is to “keep old traditions, but modernize them.”

This is the first time that Douty has filled the position of ASB director in her career, but she is not new to teaching or participating in school events. Before coming to Poly, she taught AP World History at Patriot High, which is located in the Jurupa district. For a period of time she was also in charge of student activities at Rubidoux High School.

According to student reviews at ratemyteachers.com, Douty was a popular teacher. She received good reviews from former students, and proved well-liked by many. She is also making a favorable impression here at Poly, and was accepted very quickly by her students. Justice Kieran McVeigh (12) has a favorable disposition towards his new teacher. “Mrs. Douty is a great addition to Poly ASB. While I was sad to see Mr. Breyer go, Mrs. Douty has definitely proven herself to ASB and Poly High School,” he said.

As far as short term goals, McVeigh said that “we are very focused on homecoming, but we have other things in the works […] but I can’t tell you.” According to ASB Justice Ruben Avila (11), one of the goals ASB hopes to accomplish this year, under the supervision of Douty, is to increase the budget for student activities.

Breyer has moved on to a new school. He is now the director of the activities and athletic program for fifth through eighth grade students at Stem Academy Elementary School in Riverside.

If the warm reception by her new students is any indication of how well this year will go for Douty, it looks to be a very good one. McVeigh said, “ASB looks forward to the rest of the school year, and what Mrs. Douty has in store.”
