OPINION: Unqualified girl writes about books she’s read recently.

I have a confession to make. I am currently going through a reading slump, because every book I have tried to read since mid-December has felt lackluster. I’m working on it… Because of this horrific reality, today’s book review will be even shorter than usual, which is saying a lot because they aren’t very long as it is. The good news is that my review of Bridget Jones’s Diary will be even more thorough! Let’s see how long I can ramble.

“Bridget Jones’s Diary By Helen Fielding

As someone who has never seen the movies or looked into the books, finding out that Bridget Jones is in her mid-thirties was very surprising. Not complaining though, as I wasn’t expecting to be surprised in any way by this book. I will try not to spoil too much but I must talk about Bridget’s love interests. Both Mark and Daniel were so mediocre and I can’t stay silent anymore. This poor woman’s standards were so low. Your boss sends you weirdly suggestive messages on your work computer and you’re head over heels? Daniel Cleaver is the worst. At least Mark isn’t a total lost cause. You know what? I am going to spoil it. How did he go from despising her to pursuing her? And why did he even dislike her in the beginning? I don’t know and probably never will. Another character that grinds my gears is Bridget’s mom. Helen Fielding truly knows how to write unlikeable characters because oh my god I can not understand that woman. The money laundering situation storyline with her and her man candy was so random, especially the Christmas Eve scene. Why was it added? Why is Bridget a magnet for unfortunate occurrences? Maybe the answer is in the next book that I will probably never get around to reading…
