Death of an Icon: The Passing of Dolly Parton
The death of country icon Dolly Parton has saddened thousands since her passing on August 25th of, 2026. She was widely known for having a kind heart, founding many charities (such as The Dollywood Foundation, The Imagination Library, and My People Fund), her acting career, and her amusement park known as Dollywood. However, there are some aspects of what Dolly Parton did in her 80 years on this earth that are not as well known about.
Born on January 19, 1946, she was the 4th oldest child in a family of 12 children. The doctor was reportedly paid for her birth with a sack of cornmeal. During her childhood, she was very interested in the church music and folk songs she learned from her mother, and eventually she became a featured guitarist and singer at her local radio station. After her high school graduation, she decided to leave her home to pursue a career in the music industry.
She began releasing hit songs including “Jolene,” “Love is like a Butterfly,” and “I Will Always Love You.” These earned her a spot on the Billboard charts, with “Jolene” earning a spot as the #1 song. As well as this, she was nominated as a solo female country artist at the Grammys for the first time and was nominated again the following year. She went on to produce even more songs during the seventies and win countless awards and nominations, with her most notable award being the Entertainer of the Year award in 1978, the highest award of the CMA’s (Country Music Awards).
In the 1980’s she began her career in the film industry, with her first film being “9 to 5”, released on December 19, 1980. Before this movie was released, she wrote the theme song for the film, also named “9 to 5”. The song went on to win a #1 spot on both the country charts and the pop charts, becoming the first crossover #1 she had earned up to this point. She went on to earn 4 nominations for this song and walked out winning three of them.
After the 2016 East Tennessee Fires which killed 14 people and impacted 2,400 homes and buildings, she rallied to raise money for the impacted families. With her organization, “My People Fund” she hosted the “Smoky Mountains Rise” concert with 20 artists, including Reba McIntire and Cyndi Lauper. She was able to raise over $9 Million at this event and was able to give $1,000 to families in need every month.
And once again in 2022, when Hurricane Helene devastated parts of Southeast United States, she donated $1 million of her own funds to helping disaster recovery efforts, after Hurricane Helene became the second deadliest hurricane in history.
One of her last impactful contributions was funding for the COVID-19 vaccine by Moderna, donating over 1 million dollars to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. As her close friend Dr. Naji Abumrad told the Washington Post, “Without a doubt in my mind, (Parton’s) funding made the research toward the vaccine go 10 times faster than it would be without it.”
Dolly’s money was always being used for good. She had a countless amount of charities that she started and many places she has donated to starting with her charity called the Imagination library. The Imagination Library was founded in 1995 Dolly started it to honor her father who was illiterate by shipping free books to kids all across the world.
She was an inspiration and an icon to millions of other people, and her impact has stretched across generations. Though she may be dead, through her music, her films, and the influence she had, she will live on forever in our hearts and she will be dearly missed.
