BIENVENIDOS: Spanish exchange students visit California for a full year.

Culture is what makes the world go round. Enriching ourselves culturally is key to enlightenment and further development. Two 18 year old boys, Jose and Javier Postigo, are seniors here at Poly and experiencing this first hand. Although they have traveled to many other places before in Europe such as Norway, Germany, France and Portugal; California is a long stretch, physically and culturally. The twin brothers, both cliff divers and surfers, are spending a year in Southern California to experience the vast and booming culture, and of course, California’s golden coast.

The foreigners are approximately 5,000 miles away from home, starting at a new school and are away from family and loved ones, but the Postigo brothers are handling it well. These social butterflies have made plenty of friends. “The twins are so carefree, fun, and exciting. They’re different in the best way possible! Being from Europe, they have a totally different mindset and I really think that’s what sets them apart from the other boys at Poly,” expressed Noah Uriarte (11).  Not only are they social with the students but with the teachers as well! “They are a pleasure to have in class, although they are still getting the hang of things in the classroom, they contribute a lot to the environment. It’s amazing to have different mindsets in the classroom and they definitely contribute to that diversity,” notes Kimberly Yeyna, the twins’ British literature teacher.

While in different countries, some may have trouble adapting to the environment and overall culture, but the Postigo twins are having a blast and have adjusted quite well. “We love California. Although we are just here for the surf culture and to learn English, we are experiencing way more than that,” Javier Postigo said. Both of the twins agreed that a year in California will definitely not be enough.

Although California will just be another stamp in their passports, it will hold a lot of dear memories for the twins. We hope that the outgoing people, stellar waves and fun times will always be in the hearts of the twins. Poly welcomes the boys with open arms and hopes that their academic and  social experience will bring them great value for years to come.
