Have We Forgotten About Palestine?: Recent Escalations in the Palestine and Israel Conflict

It has been over two years since the Israel and Palestine conflict came to light online. How relevant is it still to ordinary citizens?

On May 14, 1948, after the British left Palestine and the United Nations proposed dividing the land, Jewish leaders declared the creation of the State of Israel and gave it to a group of displaced Holocaust survivors. As we know, this was certainly not the last time Palestine and Israel experienced conflict. Since 1948, there have been a number of attacks from both sides, both sides suffering major losses. This includes Palestine’s attempt to retaliate on October 7th, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and 250 individuals being taken from their homes and caused Israel to escalate their continued military campaign. Following October 7th, news and social media have covered this controversial topic extensively.

But as time goes on, it is becoming harder to find accurate updates on what’s happening in Palestine, especially in cities like Gaza City. This has left many people wondering: What is really going on in Palestine right now?

As of September 28, 2025, an estimated 66,000 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict escalated in October 2023. This is a number that continues to grow. Daily airstrikes and missile attacks have destroyed homes, hospitals, schools, and essential infrastructure. Israeli forces have stated their actions are to target those they deem “threats,” but these actions have included civilians of all ages and even those simply trying to access food and medical care.

On July 27th, 2025, Israeli forces announced that they would be implementing daily military pauses to allow better humanitarian aid to help those in need, which can include necessities like medical supplies, and food. Unfortunately, Israel has begun to keep watch along the routes that the food comes from and harm many of those attempting to get food. As of right now, at least 4,000 Palestinians have lost their lives at the hands of Israeli forces while heading to or at these proclaimed “aid sites”. In July alone, at least 13,000 children died from malnutrition.

Despite the growing death toll and the worsening humanitarian crisis, the international response remains deeply divided. Some nations have called for immediate ceasefires and increased humanitarian aid, while others continue to fund and support Israel’s military operations. The United Nations has condemned the scale of violence, but resolutions are often blocked or ignored, leaving Palestinians with little global protection or support. The support Palestine does have was made apparent in the middle of the 80th Annual U.N. National Assembly on September 26th, 2025, when, in the middle of the conference with all the United Nations, Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, began to speak. This immediately resulted in 55 countries walking out in solidarity for Palestine. Very little has been done on this scale in protest for the families suffering in Palestine up until this point; this is finally a breaking point for something to be done. Earlier in September, the U.N. finally made the suggestion that the war between Israel and Palestine was a genocide against Palestinians- finally bringing more attention to the topic.

To clearly state their opposition to the genocide is Palestine, 55 countries, from Ireland to Indonesia, left the U.N. Assembly once Benjamin Netanyahu rose to speak at the podium.

There is no doubt that the conflict between Israel and Palestine is a controversial topic, but regardless of political idealogies, the extensive suffering in Palestine must be recognized. Families daily are losing their homes, now living in tents or rubble, all while grieving their loved ones who have been torn away from them. A ceasefire may still be distant, but the global community must not turn away. The people of Palestine deserve more than silence-they deserve recognition, aid, and above all, peace.
