Ichabod’s Back

ANTICIPATION: Fox’s new series Sleepy Hollow looks forward to its first season after a successful premier.

By Ruthie Farrell, Staff Writer

Fox kicked off its fall season with a refreshingly thrilling series: Sleepy Hollow. The show’s premier on Monday, September 16 brought the classic Halloween character Ichabod Crane, along with his nemesis, the Headless Horseman, to life in an unconventional modern-day setting. Such a unique twist on an already popular story might be the key to a successful season.

Like any performance, the episode

opens quite dramatically with the silhouette of the Headless Horseman slowly emerging from the depths of a not-so-friendly-looking river. Soon after, a detective named Abby Mills pairs up with Ichabod Crane, who has just awoken from the longest nap in the history of mankind. Together, they entangle themselves in a messy mission to catch the headless killer who may bring the world to its doom.

Sounds dismal? It might. However, the intense plot also comes with light bursts of humor at moments when happiness seems distant. For instance, during a serious fighting scene, Abby suddenly starts to mock Ichabod’s English accent. The contrast is nothing less than delightful. Also, Ichabod immediately establishes himself as a “fish out of water,” since the last thing he remembers is fighting under the command of George Washington. Simple objects such as lamps and doughnut holes amaze him. Automatically, he becomes relatable and easy to root for.

Sleepy Hollow impressively integrates horror, mystery, potential romance and even humor all into a single-hour episode. Of course any pessimist dismisses these types of combinations as forced, but the masterminds behind the series, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, assure that they are putting their best efforts forward to make sure it flows. Both writers are also the producers of Transformers and Star Trek: Into Darkness, and are just starting their transition from big-screen productions to the realm of television. It seems illogical–almost crazy–to take on such a foreign task, but the content is speaking louder than its criticism at this point.

This exciting series invites us to pack away the swimsuits and sunscreen and give in to the anticipation of the upcoming holiday season. With such spooky, enticing characters and conflicts, watching Sleepy Hollow proves to be a difficult offer to decline.
