School Bathrooms… No Thanks

Sep 18, 2019

UNPLEASANT: Poly High has a huge issue with the upkeep of its bathrooms.

By Connor Cassidy, Staff Writer

The current state of Poly High’s restrooms are arguably its biggest problem on campus. There is often vandalism on the stall doors and walls and the restrooms are filled with the smell of vape and smoke. While there are some things the staff can do to fix this problem, the issue falls back primarily on the students. By eliminating vandalism, vaping, and general littering, we can keep our restrooms much cleaner.

The custodians are doing the best possible job they can, by cleaning the restrooms after school.  The lead custodian has worked for 10+ years. The custodian staff clean the restrooms once a day. The first thing they do is remove graffiti and spit wads, then they pick up trash, replace towels, spray disinfectant, and mop the floors. The lead custodian said he doesn’t like the vandalism in the restrooms. The custodians spend on average 10 minutes per bathroom cleaning. “The one thing students could do to make our job easier, would be for them to stop vandalizing the restrooms and to pick up trash after themselves,” the lead custodian explains.  The chemicals have to be district approved, limiting the use of cleaning supplies to that small list. “The supplies are most definitely efficient enough,” he explains. He said that he does not have enough staff for the job, and that he would only need a propane buffer so he could do his job better. The final thing he said is that the kids should not be hanging out and must leave the restrooms if they are not using the bathroom.  The students are responsible for the state of Poly’s bathrooms. So while many go in there to hangout and escape class, just do your business and get out.
