After the mid-season finale of AMC’s hit television show The Walking Dead, fans (such as myself) must wait a grueling three months to once again enjoy the never-ending slaughter of the dim-witted man-eaters (a.k.a. zombies).

In 2010, television’s most ambitious (and successful) “living dead” show began with a phenomenal first season that redefined the zombie drama. The Walking Dead, an adaptation of a popular comic book series, rose to even greater levels with season two, which elevated the bar to even more impressive and incredulous heights. And sure enough, the brilliant writers were able to surpass those heights yet again.

With eight episodes of season three already released, the distinguished “zombie squad,” still strongly led by Rick, has encountered even more gore, emotion, drama, violence, birth (spoiler alert) and loss than the previous two seasons combined. The group now finds itself in a rundown prison, safe from the brainless biters, but not from the innocent townspeople of Woodbury (led by the self-proclaimed “Governor”) where everything is eerie smiles and false joy for miles. On the outside, Woodbury is a pleasant safe-haven from the unfortunate epidemic, but after a quick examination, the “happy town” reveals its true twisted, peculiar identity. This mysterious atmosphere allows the long-lost Merle (now equipped with a knife nub for an arm) to feel at home—all hail Merle!

While the once-apprehensive Glen climbs up the ladder of responsibility by kicking butt and taking names, Rick finds himself less and less emotionally stable as an effective leader with the birth of a new daughter and the death of his troublesome wife.

Tensions soon rise as the townspeople of Woodbury and the inhabitants of the ram-shacked prison become aware of each other’s whereabouts. Rick leads a small group of his people to invade Woodbury and rescue Glen and Maggie, who are being tortured and held captive by the Governor and Merle. This intense climax concludes the first half of season three, leaving viewers with dropped jaws and questions that won’t be satisfied until late February 2013.

I will not spoil any more for those who have not seen thus far into the show. As usual, The Walking Dead has left its undying audience with a fantastic cliffhanger. My anticipation will continue to skyrocket in the next few months as I wait for the second half of season three. Until then, my fingernails will grow long in preparation for the anxious biting that will return once February rolls around.
