SHOES: Popular Ugg boots may have finally met their match with booties.

By Lily Mitchell, Staff Writer

Ugg boots started as a trend in Australia to keep surfers’ feet warm, but they quickly hit American streets in the early 2000s when pop icons like Britney Spears added pairs of fuzziness to their wardrobes, complete with pink fleece and bling. Ever since—especially in Southern California— as soon as the leaves change color we whip out our Uggs for the fall and winter seasons. Think of them as the Converse sneaker of the boot world.

But now, say hello to booties: small boots that only go up to the ankle. They come in a variety of styles for everyone from wedges to heels to flats and every toe style imaginable—a true breath of fresh air. Tiny but mighty, these boots are perfect for milder fall/winter climates, like here in Riverside, and go with nearly any outfit. Bootie wearers here at Poly can testify. “I prefer booties because I feel that that they are more versatile and stylish,” Ashley Taylor (11) stated. No wonder people are adding lightweight and warm comfort to their collection.

So, what do Poly fashion fiends and fellow shoe lovers think? We asked you, the readers, and the results were close. The verdict? Booties won as the choice of 53% of voters so it does not look like people are quite ready to scrap the clunky suede and fur and some remain loyal to the Ugg brand. “Uggs, absolutely. They are warmer and softer, and preferably cuter,” Cassidy Ballard (11) expressed. According to the basic poll and differing opinions, this season could go either way, so why not treat your shoe-loving self to some fresh booties?
