Girls’ Water Polo Season Update

Feb 5, 2015

UPDATE: Poly’s varsity girls’ water polo team looks to continue its success after winning its first league meet.

By Franklin Racobs, Staff Writer

Going into the 2014-2015 season, players from the varsity girls’ water polo team knew that they had their work cut out for them. With a talented senior roster, the girls earned the CIF Championship title last season. However, going into this season, the team knew that hard work and commitment was needed to make up for the loss of players.

Now that the team’s season is underway, the loss of seniors is starting to show through its performance in games. The team struggled in pre-seaon tournaments; they were only able to achieve a single victory out of five games in a Santa Barbara tournament the weekend of January 17. On a more positive note, the girls’ team had big victories in recent tournaments. It defeated Santiago High School in a Newport tournament, and last weekend the girls beat King High School during overtime in the Coronado tournament, in which the team placed ninth out of 32 teams.

The girls’ water polo team may be outmatched in some of its tournaments this season, but winning the league title this year is still a goal that the players have in mind. The girls had their first league game against Valley View High School last week and finished with a victory.

As the season continues, the varsity girls’ water polo team looks to have a successful  season in the Inland Valley League and to possibly become league champions once again.
