Riverside Republican Sheriff Chad Bianco was ordered to return the 650,000 ballots he unlawfully confiscated earlier in 2026.
The California State Supreme Court ruled that this action was classified as election fraud, as it gave law enforcement unrestricted access to ballots and the counting process. This allowance of secret, unsupervised counting of votes in relation to Proposition 50 likely undermined the integrity of the vote altogether.

Prop 50, passed in California in November of 2025, and redistricted California in an effort to counteract Republican gerrymandering in Texas. This policy directly affected the Riverside area, passing with around 80,000 votes within the district. The clear support offended Bianco, who seemingly perceived himself ruler of said district, and thus he was compelled to act.
A citizen activist group claimed a discrepancy in count numbers after the election, and Bianco used this opportunity to order the Riverside police force to complete their own investigation. By these means, the force obtained the search warrants to take ballots as part of the investigation. Local election officials, however, responded in assurance that these claims were unfounded.
Rob Ronta (present on cover photo), the Democratic attorney general in California, soon responded to Bianco’s actions, calling for the return of the ballots and voting materials. This legal action was based on Bianco’s lack of right and authority to claim a seizure of the ballots, and how the action was creating Californian distrust in elections.

Bianco did not return the ballots, instead taking the situation to court where his attorneys argued for the validity of his actions under a police investigation. The California Supreme Court, however, unanimously refuted this argument, instead claiming priorities of democracy, constitutional rights, and fair count of ballots. This ruling was praised by Governor Newsom, who also soon acted to pass a bill signed to prevent future similar occurrences of ballot seizure.
Bianco’s actions exist as part of a Republican pattern wherein the seizure of ballots becomes more common. The Trump administration faced similar allegations concerning the 2020 presidential election, but did not face true investigation or consequence. Becoming emboldened by the example of Trump and lack of public outcry, many Republican local governments have pushed the same tactic.
It is fair to claim that the seizure of ballots by Republican party members will be a factor in the upcoming November midterms this year. Thus, concern continues that the democratic process will be contaminated with the stealing of voters’ voices, and the people will be left unrepresented, existing in that state until the vote is absolute. Americans have begun to question the validity of the democratic process, and consequently the nation runs the threat of lesser voter turnout and a manipulated Republican skew.
