AWARD: Poly freshman Javier Medina prevents an attempted suicide.

By Andrea Alvarado, Staff Writer

Imagine going home from school when you suddenly notice someone sitting on the edge of a bridge, prepared to jump. What would you do? Poly’s own Javier Medina (9) faced this tough situation earlier this year on October 17.
While riding his bike across the Victoria bridge, Medina was shocked to see that a girl was seated on the edge of it. He immediately halted his usual route home and went to sit next to her, coaxing her to not jump. “I got up there and started talking to her about my past experiences. I can’t take all the credit though. When the police came, they helped to get her down,” he said.Medina was later recognized by the Riverside Police Department on December 11. He was awarded with a plaque that noted his courageous and successful efforts in preventing an attempted suicide. “In reality, I could care less about the plaque. I am just happy in knowing that I stopped someone from taking their own life,” he said. To Medina, that knowledge is reward enough.
