While most of the Poly student body slept through the early morning hours of September 1, Poly Bear Anonah Lee (12) prepared to run a half marathon at Disneyland. “It was so much fun,” Lee said.

Lee’s aunt, a marathon runner herself, was the first to encourage her to start training for and participating in marathons. She even offered for the two of them to train together. Though marathon training takes plenty of hard work and effort, it is a task that Lee fully enjoys. “You can follow training plans if you want, but you mostly just have to increase your mileage, slowly adding on more miles until you get to thirteen,” Lee explained.

Lee chose to run a half-marathon at Disneyland for obvious reasons. Who wouldn’t choose to run at the world’s most entertaining amusement park? Lee explained that Disneyland puts on the event very well, keeping runners entertained at every mile mark with either mariachi bands or car shows. “It’s just the happiest place on earth. They do a

really good job of keeping you entertained,” Lee said.

This was not Lee’s first time participating in the Disneyland Half Marathon. She ran it last year with a time of two hours and 22 minutes. Her progress from last year’s marathon to this year’s shows drastically. “I improved by 10 minutes. I ran it in two hours and 12 minutes,” Lee explained.

Lee mentioned she would like to eventually graduate from running half marathons to full 13 mile marathons. “I really want to. That’s my goal. Maybe one day,” Lee said.

Aside from training and running marathons, Lee participates in cross country and orchestra. She credits her involvement in marathons to her support system at home. “My dad encourages me a lot. And of course, so does my aunt because it was her idea,” Lee said.

Lee enjoys running and the sense of accomplishment one feels after finishing a race, or in her case, a marathon. “The feeling you get after you finish is so good. It makes you feel like Superwoman. It makes me really happy,” Lee said.
