From live music, to art events and everything in between, the downtown Riverside coffee shop Back to the Grind hosts all types of events accepting all people and strengthening the community along the way.

This one of a kind coffee spot, opening in 1996, was an immediate hit in the center of downtown Riverside with its inclusive goal and victorian ambience. Just off University Street, anyone in the downtown area has easy walking access to this point. With two floors and a loft, there is ample space to hold all types of events and seating. The upstairs level is where one can order an assortment of food and drinks from a 77 item menu of: specialty teas, coffees, smoothies, Italian sodas, and fresh squeezed juices. Available also are soups, salads, ice cream, a variety gourmet deserts, and an all vegan menu. Many such items have been acclaimed by residents as being best in the Inland Empire.

A wall of books and board games on the main floor ensures an immersive environment of face-to-face contact and exploration. People can meet and chat, or study on the comfy couches surrounded by an eclectic collection of vibrant antiques and cozy vibes. The exceeding majority of reviews are positive, with the shop itself holding a rating of 4.8. Most guests describe feeling an at home sense of calm in this colorful shop, and the kindness of the workers is always noted.

One could choose to go to the back patio for fresh air and seating, or follow the staircase up onto the loft for more seating options in a uniquely comforting environment. During certain times, the basement opens, where a pool table is set and a stage can be found. On this lower level you are likely to find the different events this location is known for on many nights of the week, open for all at very low prices if not free.

With connections to both local universities, activity nights encompass educational topics, music, and humor. Some events currently being hosted are Rupo Open Mic nights on Mondays, and UCR Science Nights on the first Tuesday of each month. Back to the Grind is a home base for many organizations such as Riverside Front Runners and other groups that fight for rights, or to raise funds for humanitarian movements. There are also events such as movie nights as Halloween approaches, painting, costume parties, friendsgiving, and much more. The owner, Darren Conkerite, has hope that this coffeehouse will follow its motto “Back to the Grind is a place for all to come together, leaving labels at the door” in the many years to come, and maintain its impact in the Riverside community as a unifying place for meeting others and the expansion of the arts in individuals and the city. On top of the delicious drinks and food of course. A true social hub for all people for not only the people of Riverside, but those who visit this animated city.
