Clash Royale has been around for many years but has now made its big rise! What has made it so popular now?
Clash Royale came out in 2016, quickly gaining massive success and traction. Even though this fun, action filled game, spiked in popularity just about as soon as it was released, it had its biggest comeback ever in the Spring of 2025. This sudden comeback was marked by significant increases in revenue and downloads with May of 2025 being the highest-earning month since tracking began.
Clash Royale is a real-time multiplayer strategy/action game developed by Supercell that blends collectible card games, tower defense, and multiplayer online battle elements into one app. The players build decks of cards with different troops, spells, and defenses to destroy their opponent’s towers in a three-minute match, aiming to destroy the other towers and earn crowns. One of the most popular features in this immersive game is the clans; Many join clans with their friends for card sharing, friendly battles, and clan events. Senior Seth Rich Neal states, “Sometimes just texting or calling can feel unsatisfying, so playing games with the people you like to be around makes time with them even more entertaining,” when asked what his favorite thing about Clash Royale is. A very prominent factor in this new surge were the very popular content creators and streamers playing, promoting the game and exposing it to a new audience, as well as bringing old players back into the mix. With this, there was a significant increase of new players and a large number of returning players, with many seeing the game in public settings like school, and getting the recommendation from friends. Senior Ezekiel Monge states, “I think it regained popularity in 2025 when a popular streamer known as “Jynxzi” began to play it on live streams and “revived” the game,” when asked why he thinks Clash Royale had such an increase in players.
While most people feel as if Clash Royale is a very entertaining and relaxing game, there are still a lot of words of criticism that have not yet been spoken out about very much. Many people think that the game has a very “pay-to-win” feeling when it comes to powering/leveling up their cards, and that the pace of progression can become frustrating for “free-to-play” players. Updates sometimes make it harder to advance further in the game. There have also been big issues in the past with balance between cards, many saying that “evolutions” can become overpowered, creating unfair advantages before they are re-balanced.
Overall, many seem to really enjoy the laid-back game, some stating that it is very “addictive.” Clash Royale’s recent success and popularity was very sudden and surprising, but it seems as though the success was worthy. The simple and entertaining game has been played by many of all ages around the world,and a variety of people have found bonds within the game. Even though some opinions may vary, it seems as though the thrilling game has had a very well deserved career.
