Data Management Fundamentals, Application and Software Management, and Development are some of the fields for Mr. Scott’s CTE program Cybersecurity.

While the Cybersecurity class may seem intimidating, for the most part, it only covers a range of topics at the basic level. Mr. Scott maintains that, despite the subject matter, it is a “relatively easy class”

Some of the topics the class covers are the concepts and terminology used in cybersecurity, as well as some of the applications and software used.

Alongside those units, they also cover the concepts of how to develop their own software, with some fundamentals on how data and databases function. Security measures are also taught, ensuring the safety of students and their information.

With the recent development of AI, students have wondered about the role of AI in Mr. Scott’s class.

Cybersecurity is one of the CTE courses at Poly

He acknowledges that AI is a great tool to aid in teaching, but that it isn’t a solution, and Mr. Scott doesn’t “rely on it to replace work, but rather [to] help deliver the course information in a different format.”

By being able to present the same information in different ways, it allows students who may not grasp the information the first time around an easier way of understanding.

Mr. Scott also sees this as a great opportunity to use AI when students need to get programs working.

In the class, students learn to write computer programs

Getting programs to function is one of the major hurdles when it comes to programming. This task can take anywhere from five minutes to a full day of effort.

When problems arise while coding, having an AI assist and read through code to find mistakes within seconds—such as a missed a semicolon or a component—can save time. Since errors occur frequently, AI can end up saving an ample amount of time.

At this moment, Mr. Scott wants to focus on promoting his other class, Game Design, which is a CTE course that teaches students how to build video games. However, Mr. Scott acknowledges that he may need to spend more time focused on the promotion of the Cybersecurity class.
