On October 5, 2026, the plaintiff, Suncor Energy, was accused by the county of Boulder, Colorado of advancing certain developments that cause climate change related disasters, in the Supreme Court.

The world is currently facing the everlasting effects of climate change; the disruption of the environment is actively causing rising global temperatures, droughts, and excessive flooding in regions around the world. This phenomenon is fueled by humanity’s disregard for local ecosystems that would help propel the human population towards a healthier and safer future.

Protestors outside the Supreme Court

Boulder County is situated in the state of Colorado, whose residents are facing excessive flooding, wild fires, and worsening air quality. Dealing with the inability to fund the repairs for their damaged neighborhoods, citizens of Boulder began to protest along with environmental groups to call out the way large companies, like Suncor Energy, are contributing to the worsening conditions of the areas they’re established in.

Commissioners of Boulder are hoping to hold these companies liable for the damages they have caused. The inhabitants of Boulder have been trying to fight against these oil giants for eight  years, commencing their legal battle in April of 2018.

Boulder filed a lawsuit claiming that the company utilized deceptive marketing to convince locals that their business practices were not a contributing factor to escalating climate change dangers.

Supreme Court Justices

If the Supreme Court decides to block the lawsuit filed by the municipality and county of Boulder, it would cause a major regression in environmental protections. This case, if allowed to proceed, would benefit the health of the  general public while also creating a path to hold companies accountable for the climate damages they inflict.

The hearing, which occurred October 5, had the residents of Boulder worried. Justices Brett Kavanaugh and John Roberts are both leaning the defense of the oil companies. On the other hand, Justice Elena Kagan remains skeptical of the points made by the oil company’s lawyers, and seemed to sympathise with Boulder’s representatives. The legal battle remains at an impasse, as further deliberation is required to determine whether or not the lawsuit against Suncor Energy will be blocked.
