As a way for students to get back into the swing of school, Midwinter allows for friends to reconnect and enjoy a night away from their worries.

On Saturday, January 24th, Poly’s students all gathered at the Cathedral in Pomona to enjoy a night of desserts, dresses, and dancing. As usual, the event started late in the evening, beginning at seven o’clock. A lush red carpet led to the short set of stairs in the entrance. Dance-goers were immediately greeted with a vast dance floor, above which was a balcony full of seats. Students were able to enjoy this seating area above the dance floor after nine o’clock. The rest of the venue consisted of two rooms; the first was full of high tables for friends to stand, talk, and eat together. Here, students could grab cookies, chocolate mousse, cheesecake, or take photos together. Beyond this room was another with jackblack tables, air hockey, and arcade games.

The dance floor was relatively hesitant the first hour. But as the dance progressed, it soon became near impossible to walk across without bumping into someone. The energy was lively and electric, brimming with excitement at each new song and remix. Many, many dance circles were formed, and students cheered each other on as they danced.

The theme for this dance was “House of Balloons,” a reference to an album of the same name by The Weeknd. This album creates a sonic landscape not quite like any other. It is one that is blurry and dark, but shimmers through its production. The songs are textured with distorted bass and sweeping synths. As a theme for the dance, it offers heavy glitter, shimmery eye shadow, and dark colors, something that was represented in the decorations of the venue and well the fashion of the attendees.

The Midwinter Formal for the school year of 2025-2026 was one full of enjoyment and excitement. It brought an illustrious welcome and a steady ease into the new semester. Classes and extracurricular activities may be stressful, but Saturday January 24th was a day to forget all worries and just dance and play all night long.
