The hit musical drama-comedy series Glee is expected to have a reboot on the way after co-creator Ryan Murphy revealed that a script has been officially completed.
The critically acclaimed series completed its six-year run with its sixth season finale in March 2015. During its run, Glee received six Primetime Emmy Awards, four Golden Globes, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. The show has been praised for its portrayal of social issues like homophobia and bullying, as well as exploring teen identity.

The main premise involves high school teacher William Shuester, played by Matthew Morrison, forming a show choir filled with misfits and popular kids alike, featuring performances of classic Broadway hits and iconic pop songs of the early 2010s.
Murphy announced that he had finished a script for a Glee reboot during the American Horror Story season premiere on September 23rd. Furthermore, he claims to have “been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members…[who] were very enthusiastic about the idea.” A week prior, Lea Michele, who portrayed Rachel Berry, stated that she “will follow Ryan [Murphy] wherever he goes” in response to a question asking if she was open to starring in a potential reboot.

As of October 22nd, streaming platforms Disney+ and Hulu have officially greenlit production.
Glee fans, otherwise known as ‘gleeks’, shared mixed opinions online shortly after the announcement. Some were curious about potential plotlines and seeing how new trendy songs would be performed by the cast, while others felt a reboot was unnecessary, arguing that the original series was perfect on its own.
The deaths of cast members Naya Rivera, who died in 2020, and Cory Monteith in 2013, also became a topic of discussion. Rivera and Monteith were known for portraying Santana Lopez, the snarky cheerleader with a soft side, and Finn Hudson, the star quarterback with a heart of gold.

While Monteith received a tribute episode after his death, fans wonder if the reboot will honor Rivera similarly, who died after the series ended. Chris Colfer, who portrayed Kurt Hummel, noted that returning to the series “would be really hard to do…now that Naya [Rivera] is gone.” Fans shared similar sentiments online, arguing that the series wouldn’t feel the same without the two beloved actors.
Currently, no further updates have been provided on the reboot; however, fan theories and speculation continue to occur on social media.
