Director Georgia Oakley adapts beloved story, Sense and Sensibility, which is expected to be a hit.
The upcoming Sense and Sensibility movie has fans and critics looking forward to another romance coming to screens, showing that even though audiences are familiar with this story, they are still eager to see it brought to life once again.
Sense and Sensibility was Jane Austen’s debut novel. Published in 1811, the original draft was titled “Elinor & Marianne”, after the two main characters who are sisters; the title was later changed to “Sense and Sensibility”. The story follows the sisters’ lives in Great Britain after their father dies and they are forced to leave their family estate and move with their mother and youngest sister to a rural cottage in Devonshire.

Throughout this story, the sisters experience love, loss, and independence. More than 200 years and several adaptations later, people are still in love with this story. Its popularity could be credited towards its relatable characters, relationships and the swoon-worthy romance, the story is able to transcend time.

This new adaptation is done by director Georgia Oakley, who you would recognize from the Little Bird short film and Blue Jean. Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Elinor Dashwood from the show Normal People and the movie Twisters. Esmé Creed-Miles who plays Marianne Dashwood and may be recognized from the show Hanna and The Doll Factory.
The movie comes out in the US on October 16, 2026, while it was released in UK theatres on September 25, 2026. The trailer shows everything that people have been missing from classic romance movies: the warm lighting, the real sets, the intimate cinematography. Film lovers miss the authenticity from movies, and that is exactly what is being delivered through this piece.
Oakley told The New Yorker on September 21, 2026, “for me, the central love story was about the sisters- there are these quite clear limitations to the romantic relationship because of the time, whereas the sisterly relationship has no limits.” This is what makes the movie different. Romantic love isn’t the only form of love recognized; the focus on sisterly relationships is what makes this new adaptation exciting.
Another aspect of this movie that makes it so special to Jane Austen fans, is that Oakley is not solely trying to make Austen’s story her own. Instead, it feels as though she is trying to enhance the stories hidden within the story, such as the relationship between love and nature and the relationship between Marianne and Elinor.

Overall, viewers can really feel Oakley’s love for nature and her wanting it to be included in this movie solely through the trailer. Marianne lies in the grass, running through the woods barefoot, and tilts her mouth towards the rain. By this short one minute and a half trailer, fans can already see where the love of family and nature plays a part in this story, bringing out the relatability. Fans are excited not because they are witnessing something new, but because they are seeing something they love shown in a different light.
